Corning, an American tech company with its headquarters in Corning, New York. The company specializes in manufacturing glass and ceramic materials for electronic devices. With a press release on the 19th of July, Corning announced a new Gorilla glass series, the Corning Gorilla Glass 6.
The first version of Corning Gorilla Glass was designed specifically for the first generation of iPhones. However, Apple has never officially claimed to use the Corning Gorilla glasses for their iPhone’s. The company demanded a strong glass material which would not only be durable but also responsive. This is how Corning Gorilla Glass came to the industry by claiming that their glasses are made out of such materials. Since then, the company has made display and body panels for other companies like Samsung, Sony and many more.
The Corning Gorilla Glass 6 will allow users to customize the way they want to use the glass panel. They can use it for displays, or as textured back panels. The best part is about the Gorilla Glass 6 is that Corning will do the designing and texturing of the glass for the company.
With the increasing demand for smartphones globally, the demand for their durability is increasing as well. Corning has been developing glass panel technology since 2008 when it launched the first generation of Gorilla Glass Panels. Corning announced the second generation of the Gorilla glass four years after in 2012. With each passing year, the company claims that it has not only worked on the durability but also on its methodology of manufacturing them.
The Corning Gorilla Glass 6 can survive up to 15 drops from a height of 1 meter onto rough surfaces. These numbers are twice on the durability as compared to Corning Gorilla Glass 5 which could survive only 80% of drops from relatively the same height.
Smartphones like the OnePlus 6, the LG G7 ThinQ, the Samsung Galaxy S9 use the Corning Gorilla Glass 5. Now that smartphone manufacturers are embracing full glass-body design, it is important that the material can survive almost every odd situation. The company claims that Corning Gorilla Glass 6 is suitable for such scenarios. The glass will provide scratch resistance, optical clarity, wireless charging capabilities and enhanced durability.
Corning also claims that the Gorilla Glass 6 is durable enough to be used without a protective case on your device.
The coincidence is that Corning announced the Gorilla Glass 6 before the launch of Galaxy Note 9 and the new iPhone line up. So it is highly expectable that these smartphones could feature the Corning Gorilla Glass 6 in the form of a display as well as the back panel.
